Emergency First Responder

The first step to being a clinician.

Job Description

Working with a licensed and experienced EMT, the Emergency First Responder will transport patients to hospitals, medical centers, rehabilitation centers, and other destinations.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes vehicle and equipment checklists; maintains ambulance and equipment according to company cleanliness standards, and sees that vehicle and associated equipment are in good working order; ensures ambulance is appropriately stocked.
  • Washes vehicles at the end of each shift.
  • Operates the vehicle in accordance to any and all applicable laws, rules, and company policies. Navigates by road maps, directions, etc.
  • Properly loads, secures, and transports patients in accordance with company policy and procedures.
  • Communicates with partner, patient, patient’s family, others at the scene and at the medical facility in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Completes and assists in the completion of necessary patient and company paperwork in accordance with company policy and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned by supervisory personnel or management.

Job Requirements

  • Valid high school diploma or other equivalent degree or equivalent job experience.
  • Valid MA driver’s license.
  • CPR certification.
  • Must be able to pass background and driving record checks.

Emergency Medical Technician

Providing Basic Life Support to Patients in Need.

Job Description

The Emergency Medical Technician is a first responder that is able to provide Basic Life Support skills to patients. The EMT works together with another EMT partner on an ambulance to provide treatment and transportation to sick and injured patients in accordance with statewide treatment protocols. EMTs can perform a variety of interventions including oxygen administration, Naloxone administration, Albuterol treatments, Epinephrine injections, splinting and CPR.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Renders basic life support procedures to patients in a variety of settings consistent with state and local operating protocols.
  • Administers initial treatment at emergency scene and takes and records patient’s vital signs.
  • Provides medical examination and screening of patients consistent with company and state protocols.
  • Assists in extricating trapped victims and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center.
  • Properly loads, secures, and transports patients in accordance with company and state policy and procedures.
  • Observes, records, and reports to physician, patient’s conditions, and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
  • Directs and coordinates patient care, between inter-agency (i.e. Fire and Police) personnel and other company employees.
  • Drives an ambulance to and from emergency and non-emergency scenes in a manner appropriate to dispatch direction and to patient condition, at all times considering due regard for the safety of self and others. Operates the vehicle in accordance to any and all applicable laws, rules, and company policies. Navigates by road maps, directions, etc.
  • Communicates with physicians and other medical personnel via radio or telephone.
  • Communicates with patient, patient’s family, others at the scene and at the medical facility in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Completes and assists in the completion of necessary patient and company paperwork in accordance with company policy and procedures.
  • Completes vehicle and equipment checklists, and maintains ambulances and other company vehicles and equipment in a clean and efficient working order, and ensures ambulance is appropriately stocked. This includes washing the vehicles at the end of each shift.
  • Uses safety and PPE equipment as required by law and company policies.

Job Requirements

  • Valid high school diploma or other equivalent degree or equivalent job experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Certification as an EMT in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support CPR.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license with satisfactory driving history.
  • Successfully completion of required training programs in Hazmat, MCI Management.
  • (NIMS 100 & 700) prior to completion of classroom orientation.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write grammatically correct reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, co-workers, and medical facility staff.
  • Ability to provide good and accurate oral reports to designated medical personnel.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Regularly lift carry, push and/or pull up to 50 pounds (i.e., equipment).
  • Frequently lift, carry, maneuver and balance 125 lbs. (200-300 lbs. with partner) on both even and uneven surfaces including ascending and descending stairs, and in confined work places.
  • The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and walk and is frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.

Paramedic

Providing Advanced Life Support to Patients in Need.

Job Description

Administers Basic and Advanced Life Support to care for sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting. Initiates treatment in accordance with BLS and ALS Clinical Standards of Practice, other company policies and procedures, Statewide Treatment Protocols, and medical control physician orders.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance. If there is more than one injury or patient, establish priorities.
  • Administers initial treatment at emergency scene.
  • Provides medical examination and screening of patients consistent with approved protocols.
  • Assists in extricating trapped victims and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center.
  • Observes, records, and reports to physician, patient’s conditions, and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
  • Directs and coordinates patient care, between interagency (i.e. Fire and police) personnel and other company employees.
  • Communicates with physicians and other medical personnel via radio or telephone.
  • Administers additional care as directed by emergency room medical and nursing staff.
  • Communicates with patient, patient’s family, others at the scene and at the hospital in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Completes and assists in the completion of necessary patient and company paperwork in accordance with company policy and procedures.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associates degree; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Certification as a Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support CPR.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license with satisfactory driving history.

Chair Car Driver

Safe and efficient wheelchair van transportation.

Job Description

Provides safe, timely, and efficient transportation of wheelchair-bound patients to and from doctor’s appointments, home visits, and other trips as assigned.

  • Completes vehicle and equipment checklists; maintains chair car and equipment according to company cleanliness standards, and sees that vehicle and associated equipment are in good working order; and, ensures chair car is appropriately stocked.

Emergency Medical Dispatcher

The first link in the chain of emergency response.

Job Description

Work involves evaluating incoming calls to determine the appropriate level of emergency medical service (EMS) assistance required, dispatching units, and transmitting information and messages upon request and/or according to established procedures. The EMD also assists in all operational aspects of the Communications Center, including but not limited to; preceptor programs, data entry, ongoing training / staff meetings, vehicle utilization, customer service issues, as well as interaction with field / management staff.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide professional and courteous service while receiving incoming calls from the public or other public safety entities requesting emergency and non-emergency assistance, achieve and maintain control of call and provide proper interrogation to obtain necessary information to determine the appropriate response and priority.
  • Dispatch appropriate units according to acuity level, availability, and location or provide appropriate information as required while simultaneously maintaining radio contact with and monitoring the status of all field units.
  • Prioritize requests for and dispatch appropriate resources for non-emergency transports based on customer relationship.
  • Maintain accurate record and log of all incidents including address of incident, times, type of response, unit number, EMT/paramedic names, patient name and disposition.
  • Maintain awareness of all field units’ status and location and assist in coordinating the activities of all field units.
  • Monitor multiple public safety radio frequencies, hospital diversions, and video surveillance screens; operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, paging systems, telephones, computer aided dispatch systems, and multiple computer programs/systems.
  • Communicate with other public safety agencies, hospitals, public works departments, support services, and any other entity as needed to request or forward necessary information.
  • Send, receive, enter, update, and disperse information by computer, telephone, cellular telephone, facsimile or other methods.
  • Interact with visitors personally and on the telephone; receive, process and record requests and complaints, and route individuals to proper personnel as appropriate.
  • Manually activate interior and exterior doors from the dispatch office.

Job Requirements

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to pass the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) program within 6 months of hire (if not already certified) and maintain certification during employment.
  • Successfully completes required training programs in Hazmat, MCI Management (NIMS 100 & 700) prior to completion of classroom orientation.
  • Remain calm and effective under heavy workloads and in emergency situations.
  • Exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
  • Determine priorities of emergencies.
  • Obtain and act on information quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage of the emergency dispatch system.
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as operations manuals.
  • Learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation, and reading to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place in an on-the-job training setting.
  • Learn street locations, station locations, and geography of the areas served.
  • Learn to operate communications equipment (multi-button telephones, base radios, and computer terminals).
